David Alexander, Wine Place Niagara Falls
by Sasha Lovegrove

Confucius once said, "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life."

David Alexander, owner of The Wine Place in Niagara Falls, must have taken this to heart. Several years ago, he found happiness in the winemaking business and has been striving to make it the best success ever since.

The Wine Place in Niagara Falls was established in 1997, and has been a career David has cherished. The love of wine, combined with several years of banking managerial experience, was the perfect match for this industry.

fascination for wine began in his childhood. While growing up on a vineyard in Niagara-On-The-Lake, he recalls growing grapes for local wineries such as Bright's Wines. He says that they were some of “the best times of [his] life”. This love of wines eventually spurred him on to a winemaking business.

As he was looking to get into the business, The Wine Place wasn't a franchise. But with his determination and the help of his brother, they were motivated to make it thrive. David could offer a good product at a reasonable price, and they saw it as something that they could do as a team. The brothers banded together and began to get busy.

Not before long, their father started to visit and help his sons. In appreciation of all his years of hard work, the sons leased a new truck for him. It was a very proud milestone for the family.

David considers himself to be a pretty lucky guy. He always wanted to do something where he could walk down the streets and be proud of what he's doing. Once, he walked into a Dairy Queen and a guy there called him "the Wine Guy"; David realized that he was on the right path.

One activity that David finds as particularly rewarding is helping others make their own wine. What could be a more fun experience than creating a personal wine from start to finish? Many people in the Niagara region agree. The Wine Place has been voted “Niagara's Finest for Wine/Beer Making” in the Niagara Shoppers News for the last two years.

The Wine Place is not just a great place to create wine: they also give back to the community as well. They support charities such as the United Way, The Niagara Pennisula Children's Centre, March of Dimes, and Tender Wishes.

This shows how David does more than just provide a people with a fun and exciting hobby and product. The Wine Place is a place where someone can make a good product at a reasonable price, enjoy doing it, and know that they are helping give back to the community.

As much as David enjoys his business, he also works to be someone his daughter Britney can be proud of -- it's a source of motivation for him.

"If she's proud of me, then I’ve done well,”
David says.
